Evil Gecko on the Green -- Page 1

Hot Stuff Let me introduce myself. I am Evil Gecko, more commonly known as E.G. I'm still not sure why my folks named me Evil, but I try to live up to their expectations. I really enjoy river trips and think of myself as hot stuff. Apparently, most other people think of me as a lazy freeloader, but I don't know why! Recently, I joined a group of 10 paddlers from Phoenix for a week through the Stillwater Canyon on the Green River in Utah.
The drive from Phoenix to Moab, Utah was long, but I had a good seat on the dashboard. The folks I was with decided to split the drive north into 2 days, stopping overnight at the Cameron Trading Post on the Little Colorado river. (There wasn't much water in the river -- not even enough for our "low water" fans.) John said he wanted to stop there to look at the Navaho rugs, but it seemed to me that he was more interested in their famous Navaho taco. Cameron Trading Post
Mo's Extreme When we arrived at the motel in Moab, we discovered another couple in our party already at work trying to fit all their gear in their kayaks. I thought this new Current Designs Extreme had a great hatch that I wanted to claim for my own, but Mo seemed to think that she was going to need it for her own stuff.
My friends were concerned that I might drown if I fell in the river so they stopped at Canyon Voyages in Moab to try and find me a PFD. Even the smallest was too big for me! John said it looked like it might fit a "rat dog." Fitting PFDs
Too Much Gear! On Sunday morning, September 30th, the whole crew pulled up in front of Tex's Riverways office and started unloading gear for the shuttle to Mineral Bottom. I couldn't believe how much stuff these people had with them! I didn't bring anything with me!
I made the rounds trying to convince folks that they should make a place for me where it was warm, but all they would offer me was their cold shoulder. I discovered Helen knew her birds, but she wouldn't bother to chase bugs for me. Thankfully, the first freeze hadn't happened yet, so there were enough bugs for me to catch on my own. Helen
Mo's Boat I sure liked Mo's boat. I thought the color was an especially good choice for me, but she wouldn't trust me with it. People started calling her "Rocket Mama" since her boat was so fast. It was fast enough that I could never catch her to hitch a ride once she got on the river.
The bus trip from Moab to the launch point at Mineral Bottom was fairly slow, with much of it over good dirt roads. The bus stopped at the top of the hill for everyone to check out the road to the bottom of the mesa. It looked like a Class 3 road when it was dry, but could be a Class 4+ road when wet. They put me on the hood to make sure they took the right route down the hill. Shuttle Bus
