Abbott Family Cemetery
Gaysville (Stockbridge), Windsor County, Vermont
Page 1
The Abbott cemetery is located 1.2 miles down river from the bridge over the White River in Gaysville, (Stockbridge township), Windsor County, Vermont. This small cemetery is approximately 116 feet by 90 feet and as of May, 1998 included approximately 120 headstones. The earliest death represented is Nathan Abbott in 1812, and the last death represented is Burns L. Osgood in 1962. While I can not prove it yet, it seems highly likely that all of the individual represented here are in some manner related. If you have any information about any of the individuals interred here, I would like to hear from you.
Although most rows aren't straight, and only the last one lines up with any of the fences, (and the plot only has one square corner!), I've tried to keep the transcription in a logical sequence, starting at the east-northeast corner of the plot (to the right as you enter the gate), and using the fence paralleling the river road as the base line. Since all numbering is done from the road baseline, the rows are numbered RIGHT to LEFT as you face the majority of the stone inscriptions.
The headstones usually line up enough to create rows, although the rows aren't always straight nor parallel with one another. Rows 8, 9, and 10 are especially crooked and intersect with one another.
The transcriptions including punctuation and line breaks are unmodified. Some browers and default fonts may have a problem with the Æ symbol which was used on many of the stones giving the age at death.
The first stone is located by itself 8' from the corner. It is also an exception in that the text is on the eastern side of the stone, while the majority of stones have the only or primary text on the western side of the stones.
