(Note: I am not a doctor but this is what I have experienced and have found from my research on the web.)
I have hay fever (year round), congestion, and
mucous. These are
some
reasons why I think I have a milk protein allergy. (It mention it
here too: Milk
allergies.) I have gone to see
an allergist to have an allergy done to see what I'm allergic to. I did
show
from the skin test I am allergic to 29 things (grasses, trees, weeds,
molds,
and inhalents (cat pelt) which I knew). I was tested for 38
things.
29 out of 38, Wow, that's a lot! No wonder I have hay fever year
round! We have hardly any congestion and mucous since not using
dairy products. (We are glad of that!) Also, I've read that milk
products is additive and I know it it after being off of it for so long.
Milk
allergies might cause a lot of different types of health
problems.
Casein (caseinate) causes mucus. Some can be: symptons in the
digestive
or respiratory system, skin reactions, allergic "shiners" (black
eyes).
Go to the previous link to read more milk allergy symtoms. Make sure
you
go to the links and read more about them; especially the previous link.
According to PCRM --
Health -- What's Wrong with Dairy Products?, milk can cause: ADD,
asthma, hyperactivity, inattentiveness, digestive system reactions
(nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas, bloating, or abdominal cramps),
respiratory system (runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, itcy eyes, nasal
congestion, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, or anaphylactic
shock), reddish ear lobes, glazed look in the eyes, eczema, sinus
infections, colds, colic, ear infections, osteoporosis, cardiovascular
disease, cancer, diabetes, lactose intolerance, vitamin D toxicity,
contaminants, health concerns of infants and children), cancer,
Crohn's Disease ("mycobacterium that is present in milk that appears to
infect the person with the genetic weakness"), depression, diabetes,
bone loss, ringing of the ears, depression, thyroid problems, gluten
intolerance, etc.
The milk industry (and others) has told everyone, "It does the body good!" but that is FALSE. You have to use more dairy products because milk takes it out of your bones. Go to osteoporosis to read more.
I will explain four of these health related problems
(the others you
can read more up on in the links listed in the previous paragraph,
links listed further down, or research them on the internet).
First of all, you probably have read infants can have eczema due to
being allergic to the proteins in milk. This can also happen to
older children, or even adults.
Secondly, I have read and heard that singers won't drink or eat milk
products before they sing because it causes mucous. Using milk
was part of
my mucous problem. I have noticed that I don't have as much
mucous
since not using milk. I still have some mucous since I have
airborne
allergies but it mainly not being able to breathe as much through my
nostrils
and hardly any mucous in my throat. I know my husband does not have a
mucous problem since he uses rice milk with his cereal and not milk.
Thirdly,
in my dairy-freerecipes
group, one lady says that her asthma is almost completely
gone from not using milk products. That is her experience.
Other foods or things can cause asthma (including cats, etc.).
Fourth, that several ladies in my group mention that dairy causes
ringing in the ears. One person said it took 6 months for the
ringing to disappear and others have noticed it leaving sooner.
These are just some examples what using dairy products can cause.
I didn't show I was allergic to milk on the test but I feel so much better not using it. There is only a 50% chance of reacting to the skin test (I'm not sure about the blood test) so you might be allergic to something even if you don't react to it on the test.
You may have a food allergy and you don't know it. So be careful and go to the sites I listed above and watch for the reactions these foods my cause.
Go to these links to find health related problems milk products cause.Lactose
Is
it Milk
Allergies or Lactose Intolerance?
You might think you (or someone you care for a lot) might be lactose
intolerant but they really might have a milk allergy. Milk
allergies and lactose intolerance can have the same digestive system
reactions. Go to: Milk
allergies and What
is it, Lactose Intolerance or Milk Allergy? to read more about the
two health problems.

Comments about Dairy, Lactose Intolerance, and Gluten
The following comment is from my daughter in law (5 1/2 yr old son who
is sugars (all) and dairy sensitive):
Check it out - The medicine I have given my kid for years to help him
feel better has been making him sick! ARGH!!! I think I'd
better educate my stinkin' pediatrician!!! This is beyond
frustrating...

Lactose
Lactose intolerance is when your body does not produce or have some of
the enzyme lactase as a result your body can not break down lactose in
milk products. Many people don't realize it, but they might
be lactose intolerant. It is found in lots of MEDICINES,
VITAMINS, and FOOD. Some allergy
medicines include: Zyrtec, Claritin, Benadryl, Sudafed (the little red
pills), etc. (Allegra is fine.) Some thyroid
medicines include: Levoxyl, Synthroid, etc. Gluten intolerance
can also bring about lactose intolerance. You can read more about
lactose intolerance and milk protein allergy at Milk allergies and Milk Allergy
and Lactose Intolerance.
Calcium
Calcium is an important part of our diet. You can find more
information at these sites: PCRM--Vegetarian
Starter
Kit -- Calcium in Plant-Based Diets,
PCRM--Heath--Protecting
Your Bones, Going
Dairy-Free Diet by Laura Morton, and The Calcium and Bone
Disease. Read the amounts of calcium listed on the
label. Some foods that are high in calcium are calcium enriched
orange juice, bread, and cereals.
Foods With Calcium
Here are some things I have found high in calcium:
1. Calcium Enriched Juices:
You can also drink fortified orange juice and other juices that have
non-dairy calcium in them.
2. Cereals High in Calcium:
We use to eat Honey & Nut Toasty O's, and Tootie
Fruities
from Malt-O-Meal. This brand
of cereal is very good (except the Tootie Fruities have added food dyes
in them, which are made from petroleum),
plus their cereal has 10% calcium per
serving. I know most Safeway cereals have 10% calcium in them and
probably other store
brand do too. At least right now, Safeway brand bag Fruit &
Frosted
O's (made from petroleum) are from Malt-O-Meal so if you want to safe
money, buy
Safeway. All you have to do is compare what the cereal looks like
both bags and if it says on it "A Good Source of 12 Vitamins &
Minerals Including Calcium, Zinc & Iron", it probably is produced
by Malt-O-Meal.
3. Enriched Rice and Soy Milk (Click here to see some Non-Dairy Beverages substitutes.)
Restaurants
Most restaurants have dairy products in most of their foods.
We
use to go to a Chinese Buffet and Buffets, Inc.. We
had to ask to make sure what we could eat. At Home Town
Buffet/Old Country Buffet, you can ask them to get you some of their
rolls without butter on it. Most of the vegetables are just
steamed, most meats are fine, etc. You need to ask the manager to
help you out (make sure you know the name of hidden milk ingredients
that are found in foods.) If you want to go out to eat, be very
careful. You might have to call the home office to find out if
these restaurants wash off their equipment before they make their
dairy-free products. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
Fast
Food Restaurant Ingredient Lists
Here is a list of restaurants: McDonalds,
Burger King, Subway, Taco Bell (or if the
information is not there contact them at this number 1-800-TACO BELL), KFC (if it is available, it was not
there when I looked at their site), and Jack In The Box. There
are some more restaurants that I have not listed, they are located at Fast Food Knowledge
Featured Restaurants.
With any food allergy, you need to be careful at any
restaurant.
Vegan
and Vegetarian
"Vegan" means someone that does not eat products with meat, dairy,
eggs, and animal products. They also do not use any products that
have animal products in them. Vegetarian lacto-ovo is a
vegetarian diet that includes dairy products and eggs.So if you are
looking for a "dairy-free" recipe, search for "vegan" or "vegetarian"
and you will probably find something you might enjoy. If you eat
meat like we do, just add meat to the
recipe. Go to Recipe
Links
to find some vegan and vegetarian recipe web sites.
