Mouse Finger Puppet
For childen.
Take a brown or gray (or any other color the child wants) piece of
9x12 inch construction paper. Fold it into 1/4's. Cut
each out. (If you don't need very many you will need a
rectangle that is 4 1/2"x6".) Fold it in half the long
way. From the folded end, start at the bottom and cut to
curve up to the end of the top. Staple or glue it closed but
leave a litle open where the tail will be. Hole punch a hole at
the top of the mouse. Tie a piece of yarn in the hole and
tie the end. Make two circles for the ears. Color or
paint it (if desired). Staple it about 2 inches from
the narrow part of the mouse pattern on the top. Draw a face
(eyes, nose, and a mouth on both sides) on the mouse. For
older children, follow the above instructions except hole punch
holes to thread about 20 inches of yarn starting at the bottom of
the mouse (make a knot at the side) to the top and lace the yarn
over the top and through the holes. Take it through twice at
the end and make a knot at the side of the open end and then leave
enough for a tail. Make a knot at the end of the tail.
Use this for different mouse songs, fingerplays, or stories.
Felt Mouse Finger Puppet
For the parent or teacher or older child.
Make a rectangle that is 4 1/2"x6" out of brown or gray piece of
felt or corduroy fabric. Fold it in half the long way.
From the folded end, start at the bottom and cut to curve up to
the end of the top. About 2 inches from the narrow part of
the mouse pattern and 1 inch from the bottom, hand sew pink
eyes. Thread a darners needle with 6 strands of embroidery
floss or yarn. Place the needle through the wrong side of
the felt or fabric and wrapping about 5 or 6 times (for the floss)
or about 2 or 3 times (for yarn) around the needle. Go
through to the wrong side of the fabric. Reinforce the
stitch. Repeat this step on the other side. (If you
don't have babies in your home you can use 2 beads.) Make a
knot in yarn or embroidery floss and sew starting at the bottom of
the mouse to where the tail will be. Make two felt or
corduroy fabric circles for the ears about 1 1/2 inch by 1
inch. Sew it on above the eyes by reinforcing it on the sewn
mouse on the top and then on the wrong side. Go to the right
side and make about three straight stiches. Connect the yarn
together and repeat the same way. Reinforce the stiches with
a knot. Sew together with yarn on the top part of the
ear. For the nose, sew a pom-pom at the bottom of the
curve. Make sure you grab the middle part of the pom-pom
sewing it on to the tip of the nose. Use this for different
mouse songs, fingerplays, or stories.
