Presidents' Day
President's Day is celebrated this year (2003) on February 17th. It is a holiday celebrated in the United States that is between Abraham Lincoln and George Washington birthdays.

Art
Presidents Silhouette's (Washington, Lincoln, etc.)
You can do Washington and Lincoln Silhouette's on their birthday or on President's Day on the same piece of paper. You can do the other two presidents on their birthdays or do them on President's Day.

Use a piece of black construction paper. Place a coin underneath, and hold it (or tape it down for younger children). With a white crayon, rub each president(s) as many times as you want. (Make sure you get the entire coin.)

Place a coin underneath your paper (heads up). Hold the coin (or tape it down for younger children). With a crayon, rub each president(s) as many times as you want. (Make sure you get the entire coin.) On the bottom of the paper, draw a line. Count your coin rubbings (money) together. Write the total amount of money on the line.

President's Day Coin Toss Activity
Toss a coin into a box, empty egg carton, on the floor, etc. (You can use a penny, nickel, dime, or quarter-depending on which president you are talking about.) On a piece of paper, keep tally of how many times it lands heads or tails. Graph the results on paper.

Counting Money Activity
Practice counting money using different coins and dollar bills.

Coin Sort
Sort and stack coins in the correct pile (pennies, quarters, etc). Count the piles.

George Washington was the 1st president of the United States. He was born on February 22, 1732. It isn't know what George Washington's favorite food was but there is a Cranberry Pudding recipe at George Washington and Food. His picture is on the quarter. The Liberty Bell was last rung on February 23, 1846 for George Washington's birthday celebration.

President's Day Cherry Graham Cracker Cup
In a small cup, have each child crush part of a graham cracker. Top with vanilla or chocolate pudding and cherry pie filling.

How many pennies make a (nickel, dime, quarter, dollar, ...)? (5, 10, 25, 100,...)

Activity & Snack
Put some frosting on a graham cracker (or a small piece of cardboard). Place some frosting on each stick pretzel and build you log cabin. After you are done, you can eat it.

Game
Take a lot of stick pretzels. Try to build a log cabin without letting any of the logs (pretzels) fall. You can time to see how long it takes to build a house. Eat the pretzel when you are done (make sure to wash your hands before you build the log cabin).

Science
A penny gets dirty because copper reacts with oxygen (which in the air).

Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia. He was the third president of the United States. He wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom. He died July 4, 2826, in Monticello. His picture is on the nickel. One food he introduced to the United States was macaroni. He invented the Mold-Board Plow. (You can see a drawing at Examples of Jeffersonian Mathematics.)

Franklin D. Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882. He was the 32nd President of the United States. His picture is on the dime. His favorite foods were: scrambled eggs, fish chowder, grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, and fruitcake. Eat any of these foods to celebrate his birthday.
