4.  Lesson

Red is the first color of Christmas.  It represents the sacrifice of Jesus Christ (GAK 240 Jesus the Christ) for all of us.  (See The Crucifixion. GAK 230) How did Jesus sacrifrice his life for us?  (He died on the cross for our sins.)

The second color of Christmas is the evergreen. The fir tree shows everlasting life.  Where do the needles point? (upward.)  The needles points upwards to heaven.  Who lives in heaven? (Heavenly Father and Jesus) What can you do to live with Heavenly Father and Jesus someday?  (Write it on paper or they can tell you.)

Extension for Older Children:
You can also read The Christmas Tree by Samuel T. Coleridge - Ratzeburg, Germany 1799 so they can understand the meaning of the Christmas tree in Germany.

5. Activity

Christmas Memory Tree

You can do this as a family and place a family or an individual picture and give it to a love one for Christmas.  You will need to add more ingredients to make more than one tree.

Colored Pasta or Rice:
In a sealable bag, add enough rubbing alcohol to cover the amount of pasta or rice you need.  Add some food coloring in each bag for each color: green, red, etc. Shake until everything is colored.  Let dry on wax paper.

Cut out a Christmas tree pattern using green (or white) construction paper or go to Christmas Tree at abcteach.com and use that pattern.  Hole punch a hole in the top of the tree to hang it.  On the back, put the year, child's name,  Merry Christmas: ..., and Love,  ...  Glue a picture of the child on the front.  Have the child glue colored pasta and/or rice on the tree.  (Make sure the child doesn't glue the pasta or rice on top of the picture.)  Let dry.  Place some Christmas ribbon in the hole and tie a knot.

6. Treat: Make Christmas tree sugar cookies or dairy-free sugar cookies with your children and decorate them.

7. Closing Song:  (e.g. The Spirit of Christmas)

8. Closing Prayer
