Prayer
Primary 1, Lesson 4
1. Opening prayer.
Lesson
2. Sing the song "A Prayer Song" found on page 22 or another song appropriate for the age of your children. The songs are found in the Children's Songbook published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Sing and do the actions as it says in the song; have your children watch you. Let your children repeat the actions as you sing the song. If you do not own a Children's Songbook you can go to Deseret Book On-Line or find it at your local LDS bookstore in your telephone book. Here is the web site address if you want to search for a Deseret Bookstore near you LDS Retailer Locator.
3. For younger and older children: Paraphrase Daniel 6, where it talks about Daniel in the Lion's Den. As you act out this chapter, have your children and yourselves pretend you are certain things or people in the story: lions, King Darius, Daniel, the princes, etc. Use objects to make the story come to real life for your children. For example, mane for the lions, a robes for the princes and Daniel, a crown for the king, name tags of the characters they are acting out. Act it out more than once if your children would like to do so.
4. For younger children: Have your children color the picture found at ChristianAnswers.net: Daniel in the Lions' Den. It has on the bottom of the coloring page "Daniel also refused to worship other gods. One time he was arrested for praying and was thrown into a den of hungry lions. God protected Daniel and he was not hurt by the lions."
For older children, have them draw Daniel in the Lions' Den or other parts of the story.
5. For younger children: Talk to your children and tell them that "Our Heavenly Father can also answer our prayers if we pray to him every day and night. He listens to us. He loves us so much he wants to help us.
For older children: Brainstorm with them on how Heavenly Father has helped them when they prayer to him or how he can help them.
6. For older children: Print or write out on paper
the
Prayer Rock poem.
Prayer Rock
I'm your little prayer rock
and this is what I'll do.
Just put me on your pillow
'til the day is through.
Then turn back the covers
and climb into your bed,
and, whack! your little prayer rock
will bump you on the head.
Then you will remember
as the day is through,
to kneel and say your prayers
as you intended to.
Then when you are finished
dump me on the floor.
I'll stay there through the nighttime
to give you help once more.
When you get up next morning,
clunk! I stub your toe,
so that you will remember
your prayers before you go.
Put me back upon your pillow
when your bed is made,
and your clever little prayer rock
will continue in your aid.
Because your Heavenly Father
cares and loves you so,
He wants you to remember
to talk to Him, you know.
