Activity: Teaching a song

Target Grade Level: 4 or other grades

Anticipated Length of Lesson: 20-25 minutes

Classroom Topic: Global Awareness - Nature is Everywhere

Musical Objectives: At the end of this activity the students will:

-Sing a song

-Identify upward direction in the notation

Musical Concept: Tones step upward

Musical Skill: Singing

Materials: Song, Recording & Paper For Students

Lesson Sequence:

1. Anticipatory Set: What direction do birds fly to go higher in the sky? (Up.) Well, today we are going to learn a song that has many things that one person likes. Have any of you watched the musical "The Sound of Music?" We are going to learn one song that in song in that musical. It is called: "My Favorite Things."

2. Play the recording to the children. Ask them: What are some of her favorite things? (Let the children respond.)

3. Ask the children to sing the song with the recording and have them move their arm up when the note goes upward.

4. Closure: On the top of the piece of paper I gave, you write the heading: "My Favorite Things Are." Secondly, write down the words: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch on your paper. Finally, put some of your favorite things under those words. Have a class discussion of what the students favorite things are.
