Coordinated Movement Activity

Pratt's Educational Resources

When I was in college, I was required to do a movement activity  in my "Music for the Classroom Teacher".

Here are some things that was given to me by my professor.

My note: Remember to use the less difficult steps for younger children.

These are steps found in the book Teaching Progression for Basic Rhythmic Competency by Phyllis Weikark.

Level I        Single Coordinated Motion     two hands patting simultaneously
Bridge        Repetitious, One Hand/Other Hand Movement
Level II      Alternating Single Motion       one hand other hand in succession
Level III     Double Coordinated               two hands together, alternating two locations
Level IV    Combined Double                   two hands together, 3-4 locations
Level V     Other combinations                 see below

1.  Have the class sitting on the floor.
2.  Have the class do it at the same time as you are doing it.
3.  Use music that has a strong beat and instrumental only which is about three minutes long.

You can find the exact description of the steps in these two books.

1. Weikart, Phyllis. Movement Plus Music. Ypsilanti, Michigan: High/Scope, 1989.

2. Weikart, Phyllis. Teaching Movement and Dance. Ypsilanti, Michigan: High/Scope, 1982.
